Sikkim – Home Of Ancient Buddhist Monasteries

Sikkim is a land of monasteries, the beautiful structures like every inch of the state. The beautiful and heavenly state of Sikkim with the essence of nature is situated in between the Himalayas and is known variedly for monasteries because of the presence of more than two hundred monasteries in the place. The land of Sikkim is the home to more than 200 big and small monasteries and Gompas. Sikkim tourism is distinguished because of the Himalayan landscape including India’s tallest mountain peak!

The best time to visit Sikkim is either between March and May or October and mid-December. If you want to witness the blooming natural beauty in Gangtok best season to visit would be in spring, from March to May. Autumn, on the other hand, brings the clear view of Himalayan Range.

It is the largest monastery in Sikkim and serves as the seat of the Karmapa Lama, the head of the Karma Kagyu school of Tibetan Buddhism. The monastery is considered very sacred by Tibetan Buddhists. It is situated about 24 kilometers from Gangtok, amidst the stunning landscapes of the Eastern Himalayas.

Rumtek Monastery was originally built in the 16th century by the 9th Karmapa, Wangchuk Dorje. However, the current structure, resembling a traditional Tibetan monastery, was constructed in the 1960s.

The Buddha Park of Ravangla, also known as Tathagata Tsal, is situated near Rabong (Ravangla) in South Sikkim district, Sikkim, India. It was constructed between 2006 and 2013 and features a 130-foot (40 m) high statue of the Buddha as its centerpiece. Distance between Gangtok to Ravangla only 64km.

Rabdentse was established as the capital of the Kingdom of Sikkim in the 17th century after the first capital, Yuksom. It remained the capital for about 100 years until it was abandoned after a series of attacks by neighboring Bhutanese forces in the 18th century. The main attractions at Rabdentse include the ruins of the palace complex, stone structures, and the Coronation Throne of the Chogyals (kings) of Sikkim. The site is surrounded by lush forests, adding to its mystical and historical charm. Distance between Gangtok to Rabdentse only 105km.
